The idea of reducing our ecological footprint reflects our commitment to Tikkun Olam. As a first step, we have introduced recycling bins in the shul building and are already seeing less refuse going to landfill – a trend that will continue when we start food-waste recycling in partnership with Akiva.
We have held a number of farmers’ market to promote delicious ethical and locally produced goods. We sold out of homemade pickles, free-range eggs, vegetables from the shul garden and much more.
Next steps include switching to entirely renewable forms of energy: while the synagogue already generates much of its heating from our ground source heat pump, we will shortly be switching to Good Energy for our gas and electricity supply, which is committed to increasing the UK’s solar- and wind- power capacity.
Good Energy is offering NNLS members a discounted tariff. If you sign up to Good Energy for your household and business supplies of gas and electricity, you can reduce your carbon footprint by up to 50%. Furthermore, for every new affiliate member, the shul will receive a donation which can be recycled into other green community projects.
The green team is a small group of volunteers. We’d be delighted to welcome new members. Maybe you have an idea you want to share? Maybe you can help us to link up to local or national projects to increase our collective impact?
