You are here: learning - Cheder

Our Sunday morning Cheder is vibrant and exciting! We have around 180 children aged 4 to 11 in around thirteen classes. Almost all of our teachers are members of our community and are trained ‘in house’.  We have about 24 young madrichim (leaders) and 8 parent volunteers who help with running Hebrew groups.

Our main aim is to teach the building blocks of Jewish life, practice and literacy within the ethos of NNLS and the Masorti movement. Children are encouraged to ask questions and to explore their Judaism through learning commentaries, both traditional and modern. We teach some aspects of Jewish history as well as Jewish holidays through Jewish text and values.

We encourage all children to strengthen their Hebrew skills through small group work working and target setting.  Learning prayer-book Hebrew skills is our main aim, although there are opportunities for Modern Hebrew learning within other programmes.

We help children to socialise with one another by using collaborative learning techniques and through the context of our additional Shabbat events, family programmes and holiday schemes.

For any enquiries about our Cheder programme, please email Niki Jackson, our Director of Education.
