Masorti Kollel

Thursday 7th of October 2010 at 9.30 am

KOLLEL

Intensive Jewish Learning from Masorti

The Masorti Kollel offers high level study for learners who want to grapple with Jewish texts in their original language. Our goal is not to teach about Judaism, but for learners to become independent readers of the tradition.

The Kollel will focus on Talmud, with additional sessions on other Jewish texts: Bible, midrash, philosophy, Hasidut, the Siddur. It’s aimed at people with some prior experience of textual learning: as a guideline, we’ll be looking for participants who can translate a simple piece of Hebrew text (Torah or Mishnah) using a dictionary. We also hope to offer more advanced classes on to demand, up to the level of Tosafot and Rishonim.

Teachers
The Talmud course will be taught by Rabbi Chaim Weiner. Additional classes and mini-courses will be taught by the Masorti rabbis and top-level guest lecturers.

Programme
The Kollel will meet on Thursday mornings.
9.30-11.00 am         Supervised Hevruta Study*
11.00-12.30 pm       Talmud Shiur
12.45-1.30 pm         Short courses on a range of Jewish texts

* Although we strongly encourage participation in the entire programme, students who commit to preparing the texts in their own time will be able to miss the supervised hevruta session and arrive in time for the Talmud shiur at 11.00 am, thereby reducing their scheduled weekly commitment to 2½ hours.
